Aquarium Co-Op Black Easy Flow Sponge Filter (Fine)
Sold in-store only. Visit us at 1885 Braselton Hwy, Suite D, Lawrenceville, GA.
The Aquarium Co-Op Easy Flow Sponge Filter in black, with the fine sponge. Sponge filters have no moving parts, nothing to replace and nothing to break. Give one an air pump and some airline tubing and it quietly runs for years, which is why fish farms and wholesalers use them by the hundred.
Features
- Fine, water-polishing sponge. At 40 ppi the pores are much tighter than the coarse version, so it catches finer particles and leaves the water clearer. It loads up faster, so expect to rinse it more often.
- Air collar instead of an air stone. The collar breaks the air into small bubbles on its own, so there is no air stone to clog or replace.
- Easy Flow directional outflow. The curved uplift tube aims the return, which pushes a current around the tank, carries nutrients to plants and sweeps debris back toward the filter.
- Adjustable height. The uplift tube telescopes, so one filter suits a range of tank depths. Set it so the tube opening sits one third out of the water and two thirds in.
- Gentle enough for the delicate stock. Betta, fry and shrimp will not get pulled against it, which is the usual reason people run sponge filters in the first place.
- Reusable. No cartridges. You rinse the sponge in old tank water and put it back, and it lasts several years.
- Black components. Disappears against a dark background and dark substrate instead of sitting there as a bright green cylinder.
Choose Your Size
| Size | Common tanks | Height with Easy Flow | Base width | Sponge W x H |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | Small column and narrow tanks | 11 to 21 in | 2 in | 2 x 3.25 in |
| Small | 5.5 gal, 10 gal, 20 long, tanks shorter than 10 in | 10 to 20 in | 2.75 in | 3.5 x 2 in |
| Medium | 20 high, 29 and 30 gal | 12 to 22 in | 4 in | 3.5 x 4 in |
| Large | Pairs up for 75 to 125 gal | 12 to 22 in | 4 in | 4.5 x 4 in |
Bigger tanks run more than one. Aquarium Co-Op suggests two Medium for a 40 breeder or a 55, two Medium or two Large for a 75 or 90, and two Large for a 125. For tanks deeper than 22 in, run two or more and stack them to gain height. For very shallow tanks, trim the Easy Flow uplift tube.
What Else You Need
The filter does not make air on its own. To run it you also need an air pump, airline tubing, and a check valve to stop water siphoning out of the tank if the power goes off. Ask us at the counter and we will set you up with the lot.

Cleaning It
- Put a fish bag, zip bag or pitcher around the sponge while it is still in the tank.
- Lift the sponge out inside the bag so the debris that comes off stays caught.
- Pull the foam off the plastic basket and squeeze it out in a container of old tank water. Never tap water.
- Tip that water away, take more from the tank and squeeze again until it runs mostly clean.
- Scrub the air collar too, so algae and debris do not block the holes.
- Reassemble and put it back.

- Replacement Fine Sponge and the Easy Flow Air Collar

Frequently Asked Questions
Coarse or fine?
Coarse clogs more slowly and is the general choice. Fine polishes the water harder and suits a fry or shrimp tank where you want the finer particles caught. We stock both.
Does it need an air stone?
No. The air collar makes the bubbles itself, which is one less thing to clog.
How often do I clean it?
When you see the flow drop. Rinse it in old tank water only, so you keep the bacteria living in the sponge.
My tank is too shallow for the tube.
Trim the Easy Flow uplift tube down. Aquarium Co-Op expect this on a 10 gallon or a 20 long.
