Cryptocoryne Spiralis (Cryptocoryne spiralis)
Cryptocoryne Spiralis (Cryptocoryne spiralis) is a grass-like crypt with long, narrow green leaves that rise from a central crown, giving it a flowing, Vallisneria-like look with the easy-going nature of a Cryptocoryne. It is a hardy, adaptable plant that thrives in low to moderate light with no CO2, making it a great choice for beginners who want a natural, grassy midground or background. A tough, rooted plant. Once settled in, Cryptocoryne spiralis spreads slowly by runners to form a grassy group that gives fish and shrimp cover, soaks up excess nutrients, and adds rich green texture to the lower and back areas of the tank.
Care Guide
- Care level: Easy to moderate, beginner friendly
- Lighting: Low to moderate
- Placement: Midground to background
- CO2: Not required
- Growth rate: Slow to moderate, spreads by runners
- Planting: Root the base in your substrate and keep the crown sitting just above the soil line. Bury the roots, not the crown.
- Feeding: A root feeder. Root tabs tucked near the base keep the leaves full and green.
- Crypt melt: Like all Cryptocorynes, it may melt back after planting or a sudden change in water. This is normal. Leave the roots in place and fresh, tank-adapted leaves will grow back from the base.

Companion Plants & Tank Mates
Cryptocoryne spiralis is peaceful and pairs with virtually every community fish, including tetras, livebearers, rasboras, gouramis, bettas, and freshwater shrimp and nerite snails. Its grassy leaves give shy fish and shrimp cover and create natural grazing spots. It looks great planted in groups behind shorter midground plants like Staurogyne repens and alongside other live plants.

FAQ
Why did my Cryptocoryne spiralis melt after I planted it?
Crypt melt is normal. When a Cryptocoryne moves to a new tank or sees a change in water, it can shed its leaves. Do not pull it out. Keep the roots planted, stay consistent, and new leaves that are adapted to your water will grow back from the base.
Do I need CO2 to grow it?
No. It grows well in low-tech tanks without injected CO2. A nutrient-rich substrate or a root tab keeps it lush, and CO2 is optional for faster, fuller growth.
How tall does it get and where should I plant it?
Leaves typically reach 6 to 16 inches, so it works as a grassy midground in larger tanks or a background plant in smaller ones. It spreads by runners into a clump over time.
How do I plant it?
Bury just the roots in your substrate and leave the crown exposed. Burying the crown can cause it to rot, so keep it sitting right at the soil surface.
