Why Test Copper
Copper treatments, including FritzMardel Coppersafe, are commonly used for external parasites such as ich and velvet. Fritz recommends monitoring copper closely to confirm the correct therapeutic dose, especially when the water volume is uncertain or copper-sensitive species are present, since overdosing can harm livestock. Some types of copper, such as ionic copper, need redosing to stay at a therapeutic level.
After treatment, test to confirm copper reads 0 ppm before reintroducing any invertebrates. Fritz also notes that tap water can be contaminated with copper, which should be avoided or treated before use in systems with invertebrates.
How to Test
- Fill the test tube to the 5 mL line with aquarium water.
- Add 10 drops of test solution, holding the bottle upside down and completely vertical.
- Cap the tube and shake for 5 seconds.
- Immediately match the color against the color chart.
Rinse the tube with clean water after each use, keep test solution out of the aquarium, and follow the full instructions in the box.
Reading Your Results
When treating external parasites with Fritz Coppersafe, Fritz says copper should read between 1.5 and 2.0 ppm with this kit. Always follow the full directions on the treatment product's label.
To remove copper, Fritz recommends partial water changes and copper-adsorbing resins or filter media until the kit consistently reads 0 ppm.
