How It Works

Heterotrophic bacteria are the cleanup specialists of the bacterial world. Where nitrifying bacteria process ammonia and nitrite, heterotrophs digest the solid organic waste that settles into substrate, rock, and filtration as sludge. Regular dosing keeps a strong population working in your system, especially after heavy feedings or livestock additions.

Dosing

• Maintenance: shake well, then add 1 tsp (5 mL) per 50 US gallons weekly, or as needed.
• New setups or heavy sludge buildup: dose daily for the first week, then drop to weekly.
• Dose into a high-flow area. Safe for fish, corals, and invertebrates, and compatible with standard mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration.

FAQ

Is this the same as a bacteria starter like TurboStart?
No. Starters seed nitrifying bacteria to process ammonia and nitrite during cycling. Monster 460 adds heterotrophic bacteria that digest solid waste and sludge in an established tank. Many keepers use both.

Can I use it in freshwater?
Use Monster 360 instead. Fritz selected different bacterial species for each environment, so each version performs best in its own water type.

Will it cloud my water?
A slight haze can appear after dosing while the bacteria disperse and get to work. It typically clears within a day.

Do I need to turn off my UV sterilizer or skimmer?
It is compatible with standard filtration including UV. If you run a skimmer, expect it to pull a bit more for a few hours after dosing.
