Patoti Wild Betta XL (Betta patoti)
The Patoti Wild Betta (Betta patoti) is one of the true giants of the wild betta world: a thick-bodied, torpedo-shaped mouthbrooder from the forest streams of eastern Borneo that grows to roughly four times the bulk of a fancy Betta splendens. Instead of flowing fins it brings raw presence, a big expressive head, warm coppery-orange coloring with bold dark bars, and a curious personality that watches the room like an oddball predator. This listing is for an XL specimen, already grown into its adult frame. Care level is intermediate; temperament is semi-aggressive. Care Guide
- Tank size: 20 gallons or larger for a single fish, with a long footprint preferred over a tall one. A standard 20 long or 29 works well.
- Lid rule number one: a tight-fitting lid is mandatory. Wild bettas in the unimaculata group are exceptional jumpers and can find gaps smaller than you would believe.
- Temperature: 72 to 80ยฐF (22 to 27ยฐC). They come from flowing hill streams and appreciate the cooler end of that range.
- pH: 6.0 to 7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Not a strict blackwater species, so typical Georgia tap water acclimates well with a good conditioner.
- Aquascape: dim lighting, floating plants, driftwood, and a cave or two. A secure fish is a colorful, outgoing fish.
- Diet: carnivore. Staple on a meaty pellet such as Hikari Vibra Bites, and supplement with frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp a few times a week.
- Breeding: paternal mouthbrooder. The male carries the eggs for about two weeks; no bubble nest involved.
- Max size: around 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm), one of the largest species in the genus.

Compatibility
Forget the "one betta per tank, nothing else" rule you know from fancy splendens; Betta patoti plays by wild betta rules instead. It is peaceful toward fish it cannot swallow, so robust mid-size tankmates like larger rasboras, giant danios, medium peaceful barbs, and armored catfish work well. Do not trust it with small tetras, dwarf shrimp, or fry, that big mouth is an ambush tool and anything bite-size will eventually disappear. Keep one male per tank unless you have a proven pair, and skip long-finned or slow tankmates that invite harassment. It should never be housed with fancy male bettas.

FAQ
How is this different from a regular betta?
Betta patoti is a wild species, not a fancy strain. It is far larger and more muscular than Betta splendens, broods its eggs in its mouth instead of building a bubble nest, and is generally calmer toward appropriately sized tankmates.
What does XL mean on this listing?
This is a large, grown specimen rather than a juvenile, so the size, color, and personality you see in store is what you take home.
Can I keep it in a community tank?
Yes, with the right roster. Choose robust fish too big to swallow and avoid slow, long-finned, or bite-size tankmates. One male per tank.
Does it really need a lid?
Absolutely. This group of wild bettas are famous jumpers, and an uncovered tank is the number one cause of losses. Keep the water line a couple of inches down and every gap covered.
