Care Guide

• Tank size: 5 gallons minimum for a single female, and she will use every bit of it. Females are noticeably more active than longfin males.
• Heat is not optional: 76 to 82°F on a heater. Bettas are tropical, and most rooms sit too cold. A chilled betta stops eating and gets sick.
• Water: pH 6.5 to 7.5, soft to moderately hard, always dechlorinated, with a weekly partial water change.
• Filtration: gentle. Short fins handle current better than a longfin male does, so she is more forgiving here, but a soft sponge or baffled filter is still the right call.
• Feeding: carnivore. Quality betta pellets as the staple, with frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms and brine shrimp a few times a week. Feed what she clears in two minutes.
• Cover the tank: bettas jump, and an active female more than most. Leave an air gap under the lid, since she surfaces to breathe through her labyrinth organ.
• Enrichment: plants, caves, and broad leaves. A bored betta in a bare tank is a duller fish than the same betta in a planted one.

Never house her with a male betta outside of a supervised, temporary breeding setup. Outside of spawning, a male will harass or kill her.

About sororities, honestly. Groups of females are widely posted about online and they fail more often than the internet admits. If you want to try one, it needs 20 gallons or more, heavy planting with broken sight lines, five or more females added all at once, and a real plan for pulling fish out when it goes wrong. It is an advanced project, not a beginner shortcut. A single female in her own tank is a completely legitimate and much safer choice, and she will not be lonely.

In a 10 gallon or larger community she does well with calm, non-nippy tank mates: Pygmy Cory, other small peaceful corys, and nerite snails. Skip fin nippers like tiger barbs, and skip flashy long-finned fish such as guppies, which bettas often read as rivals. Anubias Nana and Java Fern are the easy starting plants and give her cover and resting spots.

Yes. That is her in one of our tanks, photographed as she is now. That is what WYSIWYG means. There is one of her, so when she sells the page comes down instead of restocking with a different betta.

Will her pattern stay like that?
Probably not, and that is expected. Fancy bettas carry the marble gene, which keeps rearranging pigment through the fish's life. Most owners find this is the best part of keeping one. Think of the photo as chapter one.

Are females less interesting than males?
Different, not less. You trade the long flowing fins for a faster, busier, more exploratory fish. Females flare, build territories, and interact with their keepers just as readily.

Can she live with other female bettas?

Does she need a heater in a warm house?
Almost certainly yes. Rooms that feel warm to you usually sit in the low 70s, and stable heat matters more to a betta than the peak number.
