Seachem Flourite Black
Seachem Flourite Black is a stable, porous clay gravel made for the natural planted aquarium. It is fracted clay, not chemically coated or treated, so it will not change your pH, and it stays effective for the life of the tank without ever needing to be replaced. Use it on its own as a complete substrate bed or mix it into your existing gravel. Browse our full range of live aquarium plants, freshwater supplies, and the rest of the Seachem lineup.
Why Planted-Tank Keepers Use It
- Built for roots. The porous clay gives roots something to grab onto and holds nutrients right where the plants can reach them.
- No coatings, no extras needed. Not chemically coated or treated, and gravel modifiers like laterite are unnecessary.
- pH-safe. It will not alter your water chemistry, so it fits any freshwater setup.
- Lasts forever. Stays effective for the life of the aquarium and never needs replacing.
- Deep black backdrop. The dark substrate makes fish and plant colors stand out, and it works alone or blended with other gravels.
How to Use
- Rinse first. Flourite is dusty out of the bag. Give it a gentle rinse until the water runs clearer before adding it to the tank.
- Lay your bed. Add about 2 to 3 inches for rooted plants; deeper beds support bigger root systems.
- Fill gently. Set a plate or bowl on the substrate and pour water over it slowly so you do not stir up the bed.
- Expect a little cloud. Some cloudiness at first is normal and clears within a few hours to a day once your filter is running.

FAQ
Do I need to rinse it first?
Yes. It is dusty straight from the bag, so a gentle rinse until the water runs clearer makes setup much cleaner. A little cloudiness when you fill the tank is still normal.
Will it change my pH or hardness?
No. Flourite is not chemically coated or treated and will not alter your water chemistry.
Do I still need root tabs or fertilizer?
Flourite holds nutrients well at the roots, but heavy root feeders still benefit from root tabs and stem plants appreciate water-column dosing. Pair it with the Seachem Flourish line.
Can I use it in a tank without plants?
Yes. It works as a regular freshwater gravel; it just performs best in planted setups.
How much will I need?
Roughly 1 to 2 lbs per gallon for a 2 to 3 inch bed. Larger footprints and deeper aquascapes need more, so buy multiple bags for big tanks.
