Product description

ZooMed Axolotl & Aquatic Newt Food is a soft, high-protein sinking pellet purpose-formulated for axolotls and other fully-aquatic salamanders. The pellets sink quickly to the substrate where axolotls hunt, soften enough for polyp-mouth feeding, and deliver the protein and fat profile cool-water amphibians actually need — without the filler grains common in generic fish foods.

Features
  • Purpose-formulated for axolotls and aquatic newts — not a repurposed fish food
  • Soft sinking pellets — easy for amphibian mouths to grasp and swallow whole
  • High protein (~36–45% crude protein) with whole-fish, krill, and shrimp meal ingredients
  • Sinks immediately so axolotls can hunt by smell on the substrate
  • Available in 2 oz (56.6 g) and 11 oz (312 g) resealable jars — pick what matches your feeding pace
  • Reliable staple food for axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum), fire-bellied newts, paddletails, and other aquatic salamanders
How to Feed

Drop a few pellets into the tank near where your axolotl rests. They'll detect food by smell and swim up to swallow each pellet. Use feeding tongs to deliver pellets directly to shy or competing animals.

Feeding frequency:

  • Juveniles (under 6 in / 15 cm): daily, 2–3 small pellets per feeding
  • Sub-adults (6–9 in): every 1–2 days
  • Adults (9–12 in): 2–3 times per week, 4–6 pellets per feeding

Rotate with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, and earthworm pieces to keep the diet varied. Remove any uneaten pellets within 30 minutes — leftovers spoil quickly in cool water and bump ammonia. Once opened, store the jar sealed in a cool, dry place; refrigeration after opening extends freshness.

FAQ

Is this a complete diet for my axolotl?
It's a great staple, but rotate in earthworms (nightcrawlers) and frozen meaty foods like bloodworms, blackworms, and mysis to give your axolotl a varied, complete diet over time.

Will it cloud my water?
Not when fed responsibly. The pellets stay intact in cool water for 30+ minutes — long enough to be eaten — but pull leftovers to keep ammonia under control.

Should I get the 2 oz or the 11 oz?
Pick the 2 oz if you have one axolotl or are trying the food for the first time. The 11 oz jar is the better value for multi-axolotl tanks or long-term keepers — refrigerate after opening to keep the larger jar fresh.

Can I feed this to fish too?
You can, but it's not optimized for fish — the protein/fat profile and pellet softness target amphibians. Fish foods made for community species are usually a better fit for tropical or coldwater fish.

What about juvenile axolotls?
Juveniles can eat this food, but you may need to crush pellets or feed live blackworms and chopped earthworms first until they grow large enough to take pellets whole.
