ZooMed ReptiSun 5.0 Mini Compact Fluorescent 13W
Give your reptile the UVB it needs to build strong bones, from a standard screw-in socket. The Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 Mini Compact Fluorescent is a 13 watt full spectrum lamp with 5% UVB and 30% UVA output, made for tropical reptiles and amphibians. It is the same UVB bulb Zoo Med packs in its aquatic turtle lighting kits. Its UVB-transmitting quartz glass and built-in ballast let it screw straight into a standard dome, hood, or clamp lamp socket.

Why UVB Matters
- Vitamin D3 and calcium. UVB lets reptiles make vitamin D3 in their skin so they can use the calcium in their diet, helping prevent or reverse metabolic bone disease.
- UVA for natural behavior. Reptiles and amphibians can see UVA. The 30% UVA output encourages feeding, mating, and other natural behaviors.
- Cool burning, any orientation. It adds UV and light without heat, and runs vertically in a dome or horizontally in a hood.
- Tropical strength. The 5.0 is Zoo Med's pick for tropical species, including the aquatic turtles it is bundled for. For desert and heavy-basking species such as bearded dragons, Zoo Med points keepers to its stronger 10.0 line.
Mounting Distance
| Fixture | Lamp to basking spot |
|---|---|
| Mini deep dome fixture | 5 to 8 in (13 to 20 cm) |
| Naturalistic terrarium hood (12 or 18 in) | 6 to 9 in (15 to 23 cm) |
| Minimum, any fixture | Never closer than 4 in (10 cm) |
Distances are Zoo Med's recommended operating range, measured from the face of the lamp to where your animal basks. Screen covers filter out part of the UVB (finer mesh blocks more), and glass or most plastics block all of it.

Setup Tips
- Place the lamp directly over the basking spot, not off to the side, so your animal is never forced to look into it.
- Pair it with a heat lamp over the same spot. Reptiles need warmth to benefit from UVB.
- Zoo Med's UVB guidance is based on running lamps 10 to 12 hours a day. An outlet timer makes that effortless.
- Leave shaded areas so your animal can move in and out of the UVB as it likes.
- The lamp contains mercury, so recycle old bulbs according to local rules.
Complete the Setup
- ZooMed Repti Tuff Halogen Lamp for splash-proof basking heat alongside the UVB
- ZooMed Aquatic Turtle UVB & Heat Lighting Kit for a dual dome with both bulbs included
- ZooMed Turtle Lamp Combo Pack to replace the UVB and heat bulbs together
- Exo Terra Light Domes, a polished aluminum fixture that accepts compact fluorescents up to 26 W
- ZooMed Turtle Dock to give aquatic turtles a basking spot under the light
FAQ
Does this bulb give off heat?
No. It provides UVB, UVA, and visible light without heat, so plan on a separate basking lamp.
How often should I replace it?
Every 12 months. The bulb still lights up after that, but its UVB output is no longer at the level your reptile needs. Write the start date on the base so you never have to guess.
Can it shine through the top of my tank?
Through a screen cover, yes, though the mesh filters out some UVB. Glass and most plastics block UVB entirely.
Is this the same as the 26 watt ReptiSun 5.0?
No. This is the 13 watt Mini version, sized for mini deep dome fixtures and Naturalistic Terrarium Hoods. It shares the same 5% UVB rating in a smaller bulb.
