Seachem Reef Strontium
Seachem Reef Strontium restores and maintains strontium in a reef aquarium at the levels found in natural seawater. Corals, coralline algae, clams, and other calcifying organisms draw on strontium to build strong skeletons and spread color across your live rock, and it is steadily used up, so it needs to be replaced. This concentrated supplement delivers 10,000 mg/L of strontium in a readily available gluconate complex. Pair it with the rest of your reef additives and supplements for balanced, healthy growth.
Why Strontium Matters
- Supports skeletal growth in SPS and LPS corals and encourages coralline algae
- Used by clams and other calcifying invertebrates alongside calcium
- Concentrated 10,000 mg/L strontium in a bioavailable gluconate complex
- Helps hold reef strontium in the natural seawater range of 8 to 12 mg/L
- Reef safe and easy to dose with the built-in cap measure
How to Dose
For routine maintenance, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 80 L (20 US gallons) twice a week. Each 5 mL per 80 L raises strontium by about 0.6 mg/L, so aim to hold the tank in the 8 to 12 mg/L range and adjust from there.
| Step | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Routine dose | 1 capful (5 mL) per 20 US gallons, twice weekly |
| Target level | 8 to 12 mg/L strontium |
| Per dose effect | About 0.6 mg/L per 5 mL in 80 L |
Make large adjustments slowly to avoid overshooting your target. Excess strontium can enhance the loss of carbonate alkalinity, so do not mix Reef Strontium directly with a carbonate or calcium supplement, and test your strontium level regularly.
Choose Your Size

|---|---|
| 100 mL | Nano and small reef tanks, or trying it out |
| 250 mL | Most home reef aquariums |
| 500 mL | Larger reefs and SPS-heavy systems that use strontium quickly |

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need to dose strontium?
Corals and coralline algae steadily consume strontium, and water changes alone often do not keep pace in a growing reef. Dosing keeps it in the natural seawater range for healthy skeletal growth.
Can I mix it with my calcium or alkalinity supplement?
No. Do not mix Reef Strontium directly with a carbonate or calcium supplement. Dose them separately, at different times, to avoid precipitation and alkalinity loss.
How do I know how much to add?
Test your strontium level and dose toward the 8 to 12 mg/L target. Make large corrections gradually rather than all at once.
Is it safe for fish-only tanks?
Reef Strontium is intended for reef systems with corals and other calcifying life. A fish-only saltwater tank does not need it.
