Purple Waffle (Hemigraphis colorata)
The Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis colorata, also sold as Hemigraphis alternata) is one of the most colorful low-growing accent plants you can add to a tropical setup. Its deeply puckered, waffle-textured leaves show silvery green on top and vivid purple to wine-red underneath, giving instant contrast against a backdrop of green. It is an easy, beginner-friendly plant that needs no CO2 and very little light to look its best.

Aquatic or Terrestrial? Read This First
Purple Waffle is a marsh plant from tropical Asia. It is happiest grown emersed (roots wet, leaves in the air) in terrariums, vivariums, paludariums, and along the planted shorelines of ripariums, where it can live and spread indefinitely. It is also a popular short-term color accent fully submerged in aquariums, where it typically holds for several weeks to a few months before slowly fading. If you want bold purple foliage above the waterline it is a standout, and if you want a permanent underwater plant, pair it with one of the true aquatics listed below.
Care Guide
- Care level: Easy, great for beginners
- Lighting: Low to moderate; brighter light deepens the purple coloration
- Placement: Foreground to midground accent, emersed shoreline, or terrarium floor
- Growth: Low, creeping and spreading; trim runners to keep it shaped
- CO2: Not required
- Substrate: Roots best in a nutrient-rich substrate; root tabs boost color and growth
- Propagation: Snip a stem section and replant; it roots readily from the nodes

FAQ
Is Purple Waffle a true aquarium plant?
No. It is a tropical marsh plant that grows best emersed in terrariums, vivariums, paludariums, and ripariums. Many hobbyists still use it fully submerged as a striking short-term accent, but it is not a permanent underwater plant.
How long will it last underwater?
Submerged, expect several weeks to a few months of strong color before it gradually declines. Grown emersed with its leaves in the air, it can thrive indefinitely.
Does it need CO2 or high light?
No. Purple Waffle is undemanding. Low to moderate light keeps it healthy, and brighter light simply intensifies the purple tones.
Is it safe for fish and shrimp?
Yes. It is non-toxic and works well in community tanks, shrimp setups, and amphibian or reptile vivariums.
