This Hellboy Red and Blue Male Betta (Betta splendens) is named after the comic book demon, and the color explains why. Hellboy bettas are a red-grounded line, and this male wears his red up front and out back: a deep red face and throat, and rich red dorsal, anal, and tail fins, framing a bright silver-white metallic body that catches the light like polished armor. His tail fades from red at the base to a white edge, which makes the whole fish look outlined. Bold, hardy, and beginner friendly, he is a lot of fish for a small tank. Why WYSIWYG Matters on a Hellboy Betta

Hellboy is a breeder line name, not a single standard, and the fish sold under it vary widely. Some are nearly solid red with only a dusting of blue, some are armored in heavy metallic scaling that hides most of the red, and some carry black, white, or koi-style patches as well. The balance of red to metallic scaling is exactly what you are paying for on a fish like this, and no stock photo can show you his. The photo on this page is him, in our tank, as he looks right now. Metallic scaling tends to spread and thicken as young males mature, and some Hellboy lines carry marble genetics that let patches shift over time, so treat the photo as how he looks today rather than a promise for next year.

Care Guide

  • Tank size: 5 gallons minimum, 10 gallons is better. The old cup-and-bowl advice is long dead. He wants a real heated, filtered, cycled tank with room to patrol.
  • Temperature: 78 to 82°F, held steady with a heater. A small preset unit like the Aquatop Pisces 25W suits a 5 to 10 gallon tank. Cold water is the fastest route to a dull, lethargic betta.
  • Gentle flow. Bettas dislike being pushed around. Baffle a strong filter outlet or use a sponge filter such as the Hikari Bacto-Surge Foam Filter so he can rest wherever he likes.
  • Air gap and a lid. Bettas breathe air at the surface through a labyrinth organ, so never fill to the brim under a sealed cover. They are also committed jumpers, so close the gaps around cords.
  • Water parameters: pH 6.5 to 7.5, soft to moderately hard. Change about 25% weekly and treat new water with Seachem Betta Basics or another dechlorinator.
  • Feeding: carnivore. A quality betta pellet such as Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula as the staple, plus frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms and brine shrimp two or three times a week. A varied, protein-rich diet keeps reds deep.
  • Decor: plant it well and give him resting spots near the surface. Broad leaves like Anubias Nana, a floating lounge, and a cave all get used. Red and silver fish look their best over dark substrate and green plants.
  • One male per tank. Non-negotiable. Two male bettas in the same water will fight until one of them is dead.

Compatibility

A male betta can live in a community tank, as long as you pick the right neighbors. The rule is simple: nothing that nips, nothing flashy enough to look like a rival, and nothing he can swallow. Good choices include Pygmy Corys, Otocinclus, Black Kuhli Loaches, and nerite snails. Amano Shrimp usually work because they are large and fast, though any shrimp is a gamble with a determined betta.

Avoid fin nippers like tiger barbs and serpae tetras, avoid long-finned or brightly colored fish such as fancy guppies that he may mistake for another betta, and never house him with a second male betta or with female bettas outside of a supervised breeding setup. Temperament varies by individual, so watch the tank for the first week and have a backup plan if he turns out to be one of the feisty ones.

FAQ

Is the photo really this fish?
Yes. That is him in one of our tanks, photographed as he is now. That is what WYSIWYG means. There is one of him, so when he sells the page comes down instead of being restocked with a different betta.

What is a Hellboy betta?
A red-grounded color line of Betta splendens, named after the red comic book character. The base is always a deep red, and breeders layer other colors over it. On this male the overlay is bright silver-white metallic scaling across the body, with the red kept to his face and fins. The name describes color, not tail type, so you will see Hellboys with short plakat fins and with long fins.

Will his colors shift over time?
It can. Metallic scaling often thickens as a young male matures, and some Hellboy lines carry marble genetics that let color patches shift over months. Many hold their look for life, but a slow change is normal and not a sign of a problem.

Why does his red look darker some days?
Betta color tracks mood and conditions. A settled, well-fed male in warm, clean water shows his deepest red, while stress, cold water, or a recent move can wash it out for a while. Plants, a little shade, and a steady heater keep him at his best.

Does he really need a heater and a filter?
Yes to both. Unheated bowls are the reason bettas have a reputation for dying young. A cycled 5 gallon with a heater and gentle filtration is the real minimum, and in that setup a betta commonly lives three years or more.

Can he live with another betta?
No. Two males will fight to the death, and males and females should only be put together by experienced breeders under supervision. One male per tank, every time.
