The Ziss Artemia Blender is a clear, air-powered hatchery for raising live baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) at home. Baby brine shrimp are the classic first food for fish fry, a favorite treat for small fish, and a great feed for corals and filter feeders. It comes in two sizes: the compact ZH-700 (700 mL) and the larger ZH-2000 (2 L). Find eggs, salt and air supplies in our Live Food & Hatcheries collection.

Features

  • Clear body. Watch the hatch happen and see at a glance when the shrimp are ready.
  • Precision bottom valve. Drain off the baby brine shrimp and leave most of the shells and unhatched eggs behind.
  • Air-powered. An air stone keeps the eggs tumbling. No motor to fail, and it runs on any small aquarium air pump (sold separately).
  • Heater-ready lid. The lid has a recess for a small heater or thermometer, so you can hold the water at hatching temperature.
  • Freshwater or saltwater keepers. The hatching water is always salted, but the shrimp feed freshwater fry, marine fish and corals alike.

How to Use

  1. Fill the hatchery to about 1 inch from the top with water. If your tap water contains chloramine, treat it first with a dechlorinator such as Fritz Complete.
  2. Add marine salt: 2 teaspoons in the ZH-700, or 2 tablespoons in the ZH-2000.
  3. Add brine shrimp eggs: up to 1 teaspoon in the ZH-700, or up to 1 tablespoon in the ZH-2000.
  4. Connect your air pump so the eggs keep moving, and keep the water at 75 to 80°F. Most eggs hatch in 24 to 36 hours, and longer in a cooler room.
  5. To harvest, switch off the air and give it a few minutes to settle. Shine a light near the bottom spout to draw the shrimp down, then open the valve into a fine net or sieve.
  6. Rinse the shrimp in fresh water before feeding, especially to freshwater fry.
  7. Between batches, scrub the hatchery and lid with hot water. Do not use soap.

FAQ

Do I need an air pump?
Yes. It isn't included, but any small aquarium air pump will run it. Add a check valve on the airline so water can't siphon back into the pump.

Do I need a heater?
Not always. At 75 to 80°F most eggs hatch in about a day. In a cooler room they hatch more slowly, and the lid has room for a small heater.

Can I feed baby brine shrimp to freshwater fish?
Yes. They're a go-to first food for livebearer, betta, killifish and cichlid fry. Rinse them in fresh water first so you don't add the hatching salt to your tank.

Small or Large?
Pick the ZH-700 for a tank or two of fry or a nano reef. Pick the ZH-2000 if you're feeding several tanks, bigger fish, or want enough for daily feedings.
