Mimic Eibli Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus)
Your order is reserved — we hold off on bagging until you arrive, so it stays healthy in its display tank.
The Mimic Eibli Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) is one of the reef hobby's most fascinating species — a true surgeonfish that, as a juvenile, mimics the coloration of the Eibli Angelfish (Centropyge eibli) to deter predators in the wild. This juvenile form shows the warm gold body, vertical black bars, and dark tail flag of the angelfish it imitates. As the fish matures, it transitions into the adult chocolate-brown surgeonfish coloration. A unique conversation piece for established reef tanks. Each fish is hand-picked from our saltwater display systems at Squeaky's Aquatics.
Pair with peaceful reef-safe tank mates like clownfish, wrasses, and dwarf angels. Browse our saltwater fish collection for more compatible species, or our corals collection for reef-safe additions.
Care Guide
- Care Level: Intermediate — hardy once established, but needs swimming room and a diet heavy on marine algae.
- Tank Size: 100+ gallons recommended for an adult; longer footprint preferred over tall — tangs swim a lot.
- Water Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG — standard reef parameters.
- pH: 8.1–8.4.
- Diet: Herbivore-dominant omnivore. Offer Rod's Leafy Purple Seaweed or Three Weed Blend on a clip daily, plus Seachem NutriDiet Herbivore Tabs and the occasional frozen mysis or brine for variety. Soak foods in Brightwell AngeLixir to boost color and condition.
- Lifespan: 10+ years with good husbandry.
- Reef Safe: Yes — will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates. May graze nuisance algae as a bonus.
- Acclimation: Drip acclimate over 60–90 minutes for any new tank. Established system, stable parameters, and consistent feeding are key.

Compatibility
Good tank mates: peaceful and semi-aggressive reef-safe community fish — clownfish (Orange Skunk, Maroon), Cleaner Wrasses, dwarf angels (Eibli, Flame, Lemon Peel), gobies, blennies, basslets, and most peaceful reef fish. Reef-safe cleanup crew like Turbo Snails and Emerald Crabs are great companions.
Tang mates — only with caution: tangs of different genera and body shape can sometimes work in 150+ gallon tanks. Better candidates from our stock include Tomini Tang or Bristletooth Two Spot Tang (different genus, different feeding niche). Add all tangs simultaneously to a well-aquascaped tank with multiple sightline breaks.
Avoid: other Acanthurus species, similarly-shaped tangs, aggressive damsels, large predators, and triggerfish that will harass smaller tank mates.
Recommended Foods & Supplies
- Rod's Leafy Purple Seaweed — certified raw seaweed, perfect for tangs and marine herbivores.
- Rod's Three Weed Blend — mixed seaweed for variety and color enhancement.
- Vitalis Grazing Station — side-mount feeder makes seaweed offerings easy and slows feeding (better for tang digestion).
- Brightwell AngeLixir — amino-acid food soak that boosts color and immune health.
- Waterbox Reef Salt — clean synthetic salt mix for water changes.
- Browse all marine foods for pellets, frozen, and additional herbivore options.
FAQ
Why does it look like an angelfish?
The Mimic Eibli Tang is a Batesian mimic — in the wild, juveniles closely copy the coloration of dwarf angelfish (Centropyge) species to gain protection. Predators learn to avoid the toxic or aggressive angels and leave the harmless tang alone. We carry the actual Eibli Angelfish for comparison — they're often kept in the same tank.
Will it change color?
Yes. As the fish matures, the gold-with-bars juvenile pattern transitions to the adult coloration — uniform chocolate-brown to dark gray. The transformation is gradual and typically begins around 4 inches.
Can I keep it with other tangs?
Cautiously. Acanthurus pyroferus tolerates tangs of different genera (like Ctenochaetus bristletooths) better than its own genus. Add all tangs at once to a 150+ gallon tank with extensive aquascaping and sightline breaks. Never add a new tang to a tank with an established same-genus tang.
Is it actually reef safe?
Yes. Like most surgeonfish, it grazes algae from rock and won't harm corals, anemones, or invertebrates. It may pick at green hair algae and bryopsis as a bonus.
Do I really need such a big tank?
For long-term success — yes. Tangs are powerful swimmers that need horizontal swimming room. A cramped tang gets stressed, develops ich, and shortens its lifespan dramatically. Long 100–125 gallon tanks (60"+) are the minimum we recommend.
